Second thought

The current language is "tax increases," but what we're really talking about is letting the Bush tax cuts on the wealthiest lapse.

I recognize that the primary reason those Bush tax cuts will expire is because they had to insert that sunset provision to get them past a tight Congress, but this morning I'm wondering if they really believed that would not be a problem as it happened during their visions of a "permanent Republican majority."

  • One thing I've noticed about the Obama administration, and its various speeches, so far -- they've said nothing bad about the previous Bush administration. There's been no 'we're in the mess because of them' language. Nothing overt, and not even an undertone.
Have you noticed any badmouthing of Bush by Obama?
I find this restraint admirable on the one hand, and yet reasonable enough on the other, given the obvious facts.

  • He's not been doing so explicitly, but in the SoTU thing, he talked about the deficits and problems left to us, leaving off the "by whom."

They're not going out of their way to pin it on the Bush crew, but they are softly displacing it.
