Inside the White House meeting.

Take a minute to read page three of this WaPo article detailing what went on in that White House meeting on the bailout deal. It sounds like the Dems and Obama called out McCain who wanted to come in, sit quietly, and not take a position.

It's why McCain apparently left the meeting first. (Early?)

  • Wow, that is impressive. I laughed my ass off reading that.

McCain wanted to use this for political purposes and it blew up in his face. He doesn't have the skill set to be instrumental in making this thing happen, so now it is up to fate (and the Democrats) to make it happen.

In the meantime, his economic credentials, already badly damaged (or simply underdeveloped) hang in the balance.

  • Exactly. I'm glad you read it. It was a little too long to link effectively.

(And, I think, it makes him look somewhat impotent, but I'm prone to that already.)

  • It dawned on me during the debat -- when Obama was going after him for being wrong on Iraq, etc -- that McCain is like the proverbial broken clock: even a broken clock is right twice a day.

McCain isn't a maverick, he's a loose cannon. He act without thinking and he admits that many of his risks end in failure. But every once in a while it works out for him and on this he hangs his entire political reputation.

McCain took a wild shot at the campaign suspension thing and he got smacked down. He took a wild swing in selecting Palin, and that too looks like it's going into meltdown.

He's like the demolition derby. It's fun to watch, but do you really want him driving YOUR car?

  • But, technically, he wasn't really right. The calming was largely through the US paying the Sunnis, and Sadr pulling his militias back. That wasn't in Mcain's "surge" descriptions anywhere.

With the Sunnis, at least, it started a good six months before anyone in Washington was talking troop increase.

Way too technical an argument to try to launch during a campaign where the public perception is against you, but, there it is.

    ....

And, I have imagined many times the chaos of a McCain administration, both in the public, and in the oval office private.

Thankfully, I usually quickly banish such thoughts because such a thing is unlikely.

  • That story really undermines his "leadership" meme.

"Okay, John, you called this meeting. What do you got in mind here?"

"Me? I got nothin'. I was hoping you guys had some big ideas that I could take credit for."

"Well, Paulson's got a sketchy plan, if you could call it that, but the House Republicans won't play ball. Could you use some of that leadership you're bragging about to change their minds?"

"Oh, wait a minute here. You want me to against my Party? That might look bad to my base."

"But you're the maverick, John. This is where you shine."

"I'm not doing anything unless I'm damn sure it will benefit my campaign. If you figure somethin' out, let me know and I'll decide if I can turn it my advantage or not. Until then..." (extends middle finger and walks out)
