The Bush administration finally recognizes the Russians have put them in check
An interesting NYTimes article saying that the Bush administration has decided against any "unilateral" action against the Russians over Georgia. In other words, there will be no significant US response.
Frankly, that's not too big of a surprise as the Russians have maneuvered the board so the US has little practical choice.
As example, in this Reuters article, the Russians remind the world that they are the ones in control of Russia's nuclear plant at Bushehr, saying that construction is proceeding apace.

So Obama's measured response to Russia was right. McCain would have a new cold war going by now.

Yeah, more likely a sharper diplomatic hostility.
But more importantly in my immediate calculus is that McCain was willing to fight for Georgia at the likely cost of a nuclear armed Iran.
His policy would have likely led to an Israeli attack or other Iran conflict.
His response wasn't measured in the big picture.

I don't think we can talk in terms of winners and losers in the Georgia crisis. There does seem to be less anti-Iran rhetoric coming out of the Whitehouse lately.

Broadly agreed. It's just one piece in the much larger puzzle of US-Russia relations.
One of the other things that's not getting much mention is the way the Chinese are quietly covering for the Russians. They want to keep the same right of intervention available for themselves for possible future use in some of their claimed territories.

I think what a lot of Americans forget is that Europe and Russia are neighbours, Russia and China are neighbours. There are lots of reasons to get along.

Yeah. Plus the Russia Europe energy links.

Energy, trade, investment. It works both ways. The tough talk from Washington doesn't play well in Europe.
