  • What do American's want in a president? Do they really think all it takes is to "be like me"? We keep hoping if we elect some average enough, relatable enough, intellectually mediocre enough, and pissy enough, that'll solve all our problems.

By all means, don't elect someone who's smarter and more competent than, say, that guy who knows all the sports news, or that gal who gets the PTA to do what she wants all the time... or something.

    Crest of the Empire, indeed.

  • I'm guessing you're going to go ballistic over the next couple of days as the polls show the race closing?

  • Probably.

But what gets me is the complete lack of reason ,or even thought, in the American electorate.

  • Patience. This is the bounce.

  • My brain gets it.... My impatient heart doesn't.

  • Just wait. We still have the debates out there which could have significant, maybe temporary, impacts on the polls.

  • CBC News opinion writer Heather Mallick really nails it with Sarah Palin.

"White trash — not trailer trash, that's something different — is rural, loud, proudly unlettered (like Bush himself), suspicious of the urban, frankly disbelieving of the foreign, and a fan of the American cliché of authenticity. The semiotics are pure Palin: a sturdy body, clothes that are clinging yet boxy and a voice that could peel the plastic seal off your new microwave."

    -snip -

"Palin has a toned-down version of the porn actress look favoured by this decade's woman, the overtreated hair, puffy lips and permanently alarmed expression. Bristol has what is known in Britain as the look of the teen mum, the "pramface." Husband Todd looks like a roughneck; Track, heading off to Iraq, appears terrified. They claim to be family-obsessed while being studiously terrible at parenting. What normal father would want Levi "I'm a fuckin' redneck" Johnson prodding his daughter?"

    -snip-

"Palin has it all, along with being vicious and profoundly dishonest. "

    Wow.

  • I don't know. I'm not going that far.

  • I was startled by the frankness in a respected news source, even as opinion. However, I couldn't really find a point I disagreed with. Maybe the tone, but not the observations.

  • Oh yeah. It's out there, but I don't think I'm going down the "porn actress" road.
