Political bits

(AP) The Supreme Court rejects the GOP petition that would effectively tie up the 600,000 new registrations in Ohio.

(Politico/CNN) Alot of rumors that Colin Powell is going to endorse Obama Sunday on Meet the Press. (If it's not true, his office will likely put out a quieting word this afternoon.)

(Who will be the first numbnut say it's because Powell is black.)

(ThePage) The McCain campaign's ACORN rhetoric is now up to ""a cloud of suspicion...seems to right now hang over this election."

(Palin now says we don't know "who Obama is" because of ACORN?)

(HuffPo) An extreme "terrorist" mailer in Nevada and NC. (It appears they've taken Ayers out of their mainstream and are pumping it through mailings and robocalls.)

(TPM) Obama continues to try to fight overconfidence, "Don't underestimate the capacity of Democrats to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory...."

(Ambinder) The NSRC gives up on the Colo Senate race.

(NewsRecord) A reporter was kicked hard at a Palin Rally

(Politico) TV executives plan how to fill election night if it's a blowout. (We could have election deciding projections out of Fla, Va, NC, Oh, Ind, all before I finish dinner.)

And, (Kos) Don't miss "Joe the Plumber" saying he would actually benefit under Obama's tax plan.

  • What affect -- how "successful" -- is the McCain/GOP's foul, vile fear-mongering having on the polls? On voter turnout? I'm too emotional to get a clear bead on it. Too angry to see clearly.

If Powell endorses McCain, is that a game-changer? If he endorses Obama, is it a deal-sealer? I see Powell as ultimately a captive to the chain of command, if you will. In that sense he goes with McCain. Fellow vet and because like so many other institutional players he probably still sees McCain through the lens of 2000 and is willfully blind to candidate McCain of 2008.

Obviously, I've lost nearly all respect for Gen. Powell. Nearly. Endorsing McCain would irrevocably seal the deal for me. Conversely, endorsing Obama would free him from his sins... for me anyway.

  • Right now, my sense is that it's not having any impact on the polls or anything.

What all this voter fraud crap is about is laying the groundwork for election day challenges, and delegitimizing the winner after the election.

It's about laying the groundwork so the base doesn't really think their ideas lost in a fair election. (Important in keeping them on the team.

As for Powell, I think this is a very big deal inside the beltway, inside the media. Colin Powell would not move votes, but the endorsement from such a "serious" republican would impress the chattering class.

Bubba doesn't care, but Broder will care alot, you know?

Impressing the media has beneficial effects down the line.
