Picture of the Day

(AP) "The Romney strategy is very clear — win Iowa, get a bounce to New Hampshire, win New Hampshire and write yourself a check for the Feb. 5 states and start advertising," said Tony Fabrizio, a Republican strategist who has worked on presidential campaigns but is unaffiliated this election.

If Romney writes himself a sizable check in January, his spending might be evident, but the size of his contribution would not be a public record until mid-February, well after the nomination is likely to be sewn up."

  • We've seen other well heeled candidates in the past; Steve Forbes and Ross Perot come to mind. But we've also seen that you can't simply buy the love in these races.

What's different is that Romney looks normal. I'd keep my eye on him.

Being in NH I've had the chance to see some of his early ads. I think he's got someone with Rovian DNA on the team. The messages of taking your weaknesses and assigning them to your opponents, for example. He has one ad called "Change Begins with Us" where, dispite the fact that the GOP has had a strangle lock on government for the past 7 years, he has the ball to suggest that it's the Dems fault and that only the GOP can bring change the crap the GOP has wrought.

    The man's a machine. A Stepford Candidate.

  • This wasn't meant as an indictment of self financing, just more a look at the rather deceptive way people are predicting he's going to do it.

(And, on the pro-Romney side, I gotta admit that I am impressed by his commitment. Unlike Perot or forbes who just used a couple percent of their fortune, easily made back in a month, Romney's looking to throw in 15%, maybe 20%, maybe more.

That's not just some crazy billionaire. I think Romney really believes in what he's doing.)

Although I would disagree with you in that I don't think it's going to work.

Maybe his media will be phenomenal, but I'm not sure he reaches into the south very well, and there seems to be a broad Republican reticence against him.

On the plus side, he's still fairly undefined, but I think the primary voters who are the core of the core of the base, are just not likely to support him broadly.

He's a good candidate, probably far better in a general election, I just don't think he comes out of the primary unless his ads in the big states are really, really good.
