Stray thought

In a manner of personal characteristics, Mitt Romney looks alot like John Kerry, presidential candidate. Wishy-washy, stiff, elite, lacking conviction because he's mouthing words he doesn't believe....

Think about the way Romney was pilloried over his "hunting" comments....

I just don't think he can overcome that in a Repub primary.

  • Romney looked better back in January, due to his appeal to the pro-corporate wing of the Party.

Now that the Republicans have shied away from any substantive policy discussion whatsoever, the primaries look like they will be about who can "out-wingnut" the other candidates. Romney can't compete on those terms, which is why the "Council" is trying to re-shape the paradigm.

I hope that the previous strategy of nominating the most electable candidate will yield to the idea of electing the candidate who best represents the Party's views. This would end up being a mortal blow to the tea-bagging wingnuts, or at least to the concept of them being a political force one should take seriously.

  • It's funny you frame the primary that way because watching the Bush/Romney/Cantor effort to try and move the discussion, all I've been thinking is that they are going to get WAILED ON from the right when their little show comes up against some forcing event like a primary.

By trying to demphasize these issues, they're ceding that ground, which means anybody running against them would be an idiot not to attack there.
