Gauguin did it

I like this version better. A pair of German historians claim it was Gauguin who cut off Van Gogh's ear while fencing.

  • If these two guys were not pivotal figures in the change of direction in painting from realism/naturalism to subjectivity, this wouldn't be news.

As photography grew from an amazing curiosity into its own artform, and as science and the industrial revolution began to affect everyone's life and livelihood, painting had to reassess itself. Van Gogh, Gauguin, Cezanne, Matisse and half a dozen others are given credit for nest addressing the crisis of purpose that swept through the whole art world.

The questions that arose are far from being settled, and are still being debated every day.

  • I've got to admit that one of the reasons I posted this is that I've personally never found Van Gogh that amazing. Definitely very, very good, but to me his work is not to the level of his fame and adoration.

His lifestyle is part of his fame, so, I thought I'd puncture his lifestyle fame a little.

(We all carry so many small opinions....)
