Curiosity
After reading this useless piece about Bristol Palin joining an abstinence only school presentation foundation, (no the kids didn't buy it either,) I got to wondering if there were similar star studded foundations doing school presentations on birth control, and, if so, do schools let them hold assemblies?
It's one of those lowest common denominator questions. The birth control folks don't complain about abstinence stuff, but the abstinence folks complain about birth control stuff, so we end up not presenting the more effective message (hurting the kids.)
Plus, in the hyper political environment, what "star" would risk angering people?
Maybe I should start a star studded evolution tour....

We learned during the Presidential campaign that it wasn't important that "abstinence" resulted in Bristol's pregnancy. The important thing - the only thing, really - that we were to take away from the situation is that Bristol kept the baby, so therefore abstinence "worked".

Plus, if you'll remember, just a few months ago, she said abstinence was not realistic.
But my point wasn't really about her. It was about them allowing the politically easy rather than the right.
The data shows again and again that bstinence programs don't work.

Abstinence programs are designed to make uninvolved parents feel good about themselves.
I cannot follow the "logic" whereby a single teen mom is a role model/spokesperson for an abstinence-only program. I just can't.
Is she saying either she regrets having a baby, in which case she's an unloving mom and should have given the kid up for adoption. Or she doesn't regret having the baby in which case she doesn't regret the sex (since, presumably, even for a Christian that's the only way to get a baby.)

I think that's exactly the key. Abstinence is about the supporters' self images not the kids.
