This sentence seems to sum it up: "There was a time when conservative intellectuals raised the level of American public debate and helped to keep it sober. Those days are gone," but the question I keep asking is "Why?" Maybe it is simplistic, but the answer that I have settled on recently is that the Limbaugh-types are stirring up people for the pure and simple motivation of personal profit. Remember when Rush denounced the people he had been pushing after the last election in what I guessed was a very rare moment of candor? Rabble rousing pays very well and for the very rich there is never enough money and talk radio pays very well. Molly C.
I'm not sure I fully agree, because I don't think they're just being stirred up for profit, but also for votes and power, but I really do think you're onto something here.
That it's the outside groups vying for whatever that have driven this. They've figured out that they can "jingo-ize" their way into prominence.
I think that's a very good working theory, especially because if you think about some of the less thoughtful acts, Schiavo, stem cells, whatever, they came out of that Dobson, Limbaugh kinda power structure.
