If you think the GOP is ugly now......

Another one of those unwritten stories this year is the potential longer term impact of so much youth support for Obama. These people are becoming Democrats (or at least Democrat sympathetic) at huge rates. They are more interested and more involved than any youth in generations.

If some number of these voters stay Democratic in the years/decades ahead, that, coupled with the demographic changes towards more minority voters, that likely reshapes and impacts the Republican/Democratic balance for decades as this voting bloc passes through the age demographics.

(Think about all the Dems who talk about being inspired by JFK's campaign or all the Republicans who talk about Reagan.)

That's also why if Obama does get into office, the Republicans will try even harder to tear him down, to tarnish that experience. For the future of their party, the Republicans can't afford to lose a generation of white kids.

So, if you thought the Clinton stuff was nasty, just wait....

  • But unlike the GOP of the 90's which controlled the both houses of congress, this GOP is in decline -- both in power and public sentiment. There is a much greater risk of blowback if the GOP -- now left with a concentration of bottom feeders -- were to get any more nastier than they already are.

Patriotic, "pro-America" conservatives better get a handle of the fascists, racists and rhetorical Molotov cocktail throwers running their party.

  • Maybe.

I get your point, but I'm not so convinced. Their first job will be to tear Obama down before they can rebuild.

Obama will be the national face of Democrats they run against in 2010. That first midterm is a referendum on him.

(And they definitely can't touch race.)

  • I have not doubt the Repubs will try to tear down Obama. They are, after all, the party of blame. That's almost ALL they do. I just don't know how effective they'll be.

  • Or how much ammunition he gives.

Bill Clinton gave alot of ammunition.

    +++++

A great point. We're already seeing this beginning on right-wing talk radio, on which Obama is a just plain ol' bad guy, taking the country in a bad direction. He's bad because... well, he's just bad.

Somehow the erosion of the country during the last 8 Republican years has escaped their notice.

They attempt to paint Biden as a clown by magnifying campaign gaffes.

The whole thing is fascinating to watch, as the Right devolves from arrogance to vituperation.

  • It's just going to continue (about a week later) as if an election never took place.

Thinking about it a little more, I guess the key would be whether the attacks are viewed to stick. Right wing radio required the 1994 "revolution" to take off.

Without new ideas or a substantially new presentation, they won't win converts.

  • lest we forget all the JFK/camelot feelings of inspiration and hope for the 1960 youth bloc was snuffed-out in 11 seconds in an open-air car ride through downtown Dallas...point being: it all can vanish in a blink...somehow today's youth bloc needs to remain (and be reminded to stay) vigilent. big, invisible corruptive powers from 1955-1990 still wander...

  • Yeah.

(Just as a policy statement, I'm not talking about that possibility because there's nothing I can do about it, and fueling that stuff doesn't feel right.)
