Big gaps in big mainstream polls.

Personally, I think we're at Obama plus 8-9, but wow.

NYTimes/CBS Obama 53/39.

LATimes/Bloomberg 50/41.

(The big name polls conducted over the last week, ABC/WaPo Obama +10, FoxNews Obama +7, Newsweek Obama +11.)

The Palin decision has killed them. The "suspension" and economic response killed them. Ayers killed them. They haven't made a good decision since August.

(Later: You gotta love that the McCain campaign is reduced to arguing that they're actually only losing by 6-8.)

21 days left.

Time is not on McCain's side here, either.

That's 21 days of shaking the dice to see if today is the day that Palin makes some horrible gaffe. It's 21 days for a scandal to erupt involving yet another of his surrogates or campaign staff. It's 21 days in which other Obama monkeys can be trotted out. Or a period of time in which McCain-supporting idiots could be caught on tape saying something at a rally that will remain in the public's mind about the McCain campaign up to the election.

Or 21 days for him to take that long-anticipated swing at a reporter or similarly melt down...or even have a heart attack from the stress and get everyone thinking about a Palin White House.

McCain is desperate, and desperate people do crazy things. Obama can afford to be cautious, work the ground game, and let early voting be his insurance against any softening of support.

Early voting is going to be the sleeper issue of this election. We could easily see 20% of Ohio's voters casting early ballots before election day. That means shorter lines, less chance for voter caging, and fewer people to concentrate on turning out for Election Day.

  • Yeah, I'm feeling pretty good.

And, frankly, a sizable lead would be enough that the GOP may not spend all of its "voter challenging," recount wanting, voting site interfering cards. They definitely have the incentive to keep up the "Dems cheat" line alive for the next election, but if it comes in with a big lead, that will all be pro forma.

(Plus, I don't see any real signs that this White House is going to help him.)

And, the nice thing is, though, with "erratic" now being the McCain storyline, and the media having bought into the narrative that the McCain campaign pulls "stunts" and that all of their movements and proposals should be judged as attempts to change their polling first, any of those McCain camp flails are far less likely to work.

(And you think only 20% early in Ohio? Admittedly, there will be massive GOTV on election day, but I would have guessed early voting higher than 20%.)
