The state of play on "attack Iran"

An interesting Haaretz article looking at the current state of US-Israeli diplomatic play over an attack on Iran. Short version, not likely soon.

  • Iran needs a little bit more carrot to go with the stick. The regime has always been about exterminating the Israelis, and the genocidal rhetoric just gets stronger over the years. The regime claims to be in some sort of holy war against Israel. That is the status quo.

But then they claim that there will be dire consequences against Israel if it bombed the reactors.

It might lead some in Israel to think "they already hate us, want to exterminate us, and have their proxy armies fire missiles at us, so how can it be worse? what have we got to lose?"

Perhaps if Iran scaled back the genocidal zeal to "We hate Jews, but we won't exterminate them unless things escalate".

  • Agreed.

Part of unacceptable language is domestic politics inside Iran, hating Jews is a vote getter there, but that stuff is definitely not fit for the world stage and definitely not helping them in their goals.

(I would say part of the problem is that they have Russia and, to a lesser degree China, running interference for them, each for their own geopolitical reasons, but that diplomatic protection gives the Iranians space for that s**t.)
