  • Will hurricane Gustav kill the momentum of the Palin announcement and bite into the GOP convention coverage?

These quadranial political seasons are like trips into the twilight zone. Who knows what the state of the campaigns will be seven days from now. Events on the ground, as they say, have a terrible way of destroying the plans of politicians.

Yes, I think so. It will also remind voters of Katrina.
McCain is heavily dependent on a very big bounce from the RNC. All of the analysts have been saying "wait until after the Conventions". Now we are reaching that stage, and the polling is not looking good for McCain.

  • Yes, it will cut into the convention, but, it may also douse some of the immediate push out revelations/opinions on Palin.

And, I haven't really been talking about the hurricane because, having been through one, I wouldn't wish it on anybody (even if it is for the good cause of messing up McCain.) I don't want to root for a hurricane.

Right now, the center of the cone is to the west of New Orleans. We're still way out so that's not any kind of guarantee, but, if it hits the western La coast a whole lot fewer people will be affected.

    .....

Todd, down below, I have a rambling post on Palin, polling, and the narrative.

  • I hope you didn't think I was "rooting" for the hurricane! I'm just wondering how these natural events will affect the coverage and plans of the campaigns.

  • No, I didn't. Not at all.

It's just when I put stuff on the front page, I have to think of how people might interpret it.

And, it IS, in part, a political story.
