Oh, man......

Not that I think Obama should spend all his time kowtowing to the Clinton folks, but, oy.......
After wrapping up his speech to donors Wednesday evening with an emphatic, “We will change the world!”, Obama left the stage to loud music, only to re-appear minutes later to complete his duties.

“Hold on a second guys, I was getting all carried away. I’ve got one more thing that is important to do,” Obama said to a laughing audience. “Senator Clinton still has some debt. And I could have had some debt if I hadn’t won so I know the drill.”

  • I wonder if this is really about fundraising. That is, the RNC has a huge bankroll versus the DNC. I'm not sure if it's my perceptions or reality, but I don't think the Clintons have gone out of their way to press the Dem deep-pocket contributors (such as they are) to dig deeper and support the party. Perhaps the deal is, "you help get my debt payed off, THEN well start fundraising for you and the party."

Just a wild assed guess. I may be wrong, but I don't think I'm nuts.

  • No, completely nuts. I think she's "released them" and told them it's not an abrogation to donate to Obama.

But at the same time, how deep is her obligation here? She's appearing at the fundraisers with him and making the appeals. She's talking to her big donors. You really can't expect her to be Joe Lieberman puppy dogging around behind him.

Besides, I think it would have more impact if it comes around the convention. If she's going to make x number of appeals to the small donors, it would be far more effective to wait until they all get on board, you know?

  • I was thinking more Bill Clinton on this, but I take your points.

  • Bill's another matter.

Take into account that the Obama camp may not want him out there. He's proved somewhat uncontrollable, and right now, they seem dead set on message control.

I mean, they're shutting down 527's, free money, free advertising, in an effort at message control.

  • OK. But I'm under the impression the DNC could use some cash and that some (many?) of the DLC-type deep pockets are holding out. Bill could be very (non-publicly) effective here and I'm not sure he's banging the tambourine for the party like he would if Hillary was the nominee.

Again, forget about the public rallies and generic e-mail bombs to small donors. I'm talking about that schmoozing, flesh pressing, phone calling, golf coursing, cigar chomping, scotch sipping kind of fund raising.

OK. With that backdrop, I'm wondering if BILL Clinton is intentionally sitting on his hands until Obama gets Hillary's debts paid and/or shows the Big Dog "due respect."

(I'm not trying to beat a dead horse here... I just think we may be talking past each other a little bit)

  • Fair. But remember that Obama has taken over the DNC and marginalized the DLC influence. That primary was about control of the party.

But, yeah, he could easily do the DNC fundraiser role, but who is he gonna do it for? Obama? Dean? Pelosi? Reid?

All of whom have taken their power, at times confrontationally, from the Clintons.
