  • I wonder if English women were as gender infatuated with Maggie Thatcher?

    I'm still having trouble with what I perceive to be an over emphasis on gender as a reason to vote for Hillary. It should be "And by the way, she a woman so that's a bonus", not "And by the way, she has a good plan for public education so that's a bonus."

    I feel the same about African-Americans who vote for Obama because of his race.

  • Tribalism. Excellent description. It's not with race or gender, per se, it's with a tribal identity. I think looking at it that way helps to remove emotion or my own prejudices from the discussion.

    Earlier, I was going to make analogy to fans supporting their local sports teams. Perhaps this is kinda what you're saying. No?

  • Sort of, but I think it goes deeper than that because we're talking about historically discriminated against groups. They see it as something of a manifestation of their own battles.

  • Anon - my disgust has nothing to do with whether or not it is OK to speak of "female undergarments" but not "male undergarments" The woman's sign seems like a light-hearted reference to the somewhat mythical bra-burning episodes of the late 1960's-early 1970's. Her sign makes no derogatory comment towards anyone else. Your comment, on the other hand, seeks to belittle a woman with sexual overtones. As far as I know, there are no analogous historical connotations relating to the jock strap so your latest iteration (while not derogatory) doesn't make much sense. If you are trying to build your case for Obama, maybe you would be better to drop your ad hominem attacks on Hillary and focus on the many actual reasons to vote for him. I am not a huge supporter of Hillary but I am really tired and alarmed by some who seem to say, I am voting for Obama because Hillary cries or I am voting for Obama because Hillary can't carry his jock strap. He's a great candidate without need of being propped up by such nonsense. I think you are doing Obama a disservice.

  • i'm shining a light where I think it needs to be pointed...to the Clintons most obvious pandering to women. If Obama was even remotely pandering to blacks it would get enourmous negative spin. But HRC gets a free-pass when she talks of it being the right time for a woman president. It is just as unethical to pander to sex as it is to race. HRC and her now soft, backhanded replies of off-putting blacks and assuming they will all vote for Obama may result in them NOT voting for her if she gets the nomination. She has deicded she doens't need them since she has so many latinos. triangulation at its most basic...

    I am voting for Obama because this country needs change desperately. No more Clinton/Bush corprotacracy. If it is replaced with Obama corpratacracy then so be it. It will be a change at least! I want to see a woman president but one who worked her way through the process - not just implanted in the process because of her charming husband...whether that is true or not, it is the perception of millions. And perception is reality - just as GWB.
