When a joke becomes reality
Ten days ago, I put up a picture of Huckabee with the jokey post title, "A candidate only the home-schooled could love...."
Well, come to find out, it's not a joke. (WaPo Front Page) Home-School Ties Aided Huckabee's Iowa Rise

I find this rather disturbing. While I support choice and homeschooling if people so choose but do these people and Huckabee really think the answer to all of our education problems is for everyone to do it on their own? I just don't get it.

to me, Homeschooling is like a lot of things, like guns for instance. I know people who are extremely responsible owning guns and have no problem with that.
However, there's also alot of people who shouldn't own guns, and with homeschooling, their misjudgements cost their kids.
And, more directly to your point, yeah, they believe in secessionism. They're right, and the rest of us are wrong, and the only way to "save" their kids is to try and isolate them.
It's a broader anti-society fear reaction.
