The narrative

Check out how "the narrative" is woven into this AP piece.
President Bush forced Congress to back down from deadlines in Iraq. On Thursday, he scheduled a news conference to talk about the unpopular war and the relentless violence.

That's a long way from last year.

  • But "the narrative" is true.

  • Yes. Certainly.

But it was also true a year ago during the 2006 election series, but we didn't see this sort of language then.

I'm often fascinated how all those little inclusions and descriptors act to change perception.

  • Good point.

I think the disaster known as the Military Commissions Act (is that what the torture and renunciation of habeas corpus act was called?) was billed as a win-win compromise between WH and congress, when in fact it was a capitulation ensconced in rhetorical -- but irrelevant -- fig leaves.

  • Definitely.

I wrote alot about that at the time because McCain (my her as you know) made this big front of standing up, but in the end conceded every point.

  • Yes. I remember now.

As my old man used to say: "I have a great memory... it's just short."
