It's not so much the Christians I'm worried about...

There's been some press describing Pat Robertson's Regent University having outsized influence in the Department of Justice, but what I'm finding far more troubling are the multiple small revelations that seem to indicate that the Justice Department might have been a nest of the Bush campaign's opposition research team. (Goodling and Griffin, Comstock.)

I mean, the ultimate charge in the US Attorney's scandal is that the administration was trying to place partisans in DOJ positions to build flimsy but inflammatory cases for political ends, and who is more suited for that political wetwork than opposition research folks.

Just a few so far, but worth watching.

  • I'm not at all concerned about Christians -- even evangelical Christians -- working in the DoJ. The thing is, as you point out, these Regent hires were not picked for their faith in Jesus, but for their commitment to actively advancing a political view despite the law; that justice, far from being blind, must be guided by an enlightened hand to ensure the "good" people don't get brought down by nasty little "technicalities."

It remains to be seen if this polluting of the the DoJ will have a lasting affect on the department, or whether the young ones will move on to friendlier pastures (or be rendered moot) when their mentors are removed in Jan '09, God willing.

  • Right.

The question is the longer term damage. One of the Senators was asking Sampson if he knew of whether Goodling was asking new career hires about their loyalty to Bush.

That could have longe term echoes.
