What did $23 million buy Mitt Romney?
Mitt Romney raises a bunch of money from the investment crowd, and suddenly he's treated to headlines for his "rise" in the polls. He's "risen" all the way up to 10%.
That's a headline that only money can buy.

Will Mitt Romney be the Steve Forbes of the '08 cycle? All dough, but no go?
I dunno. I don't trust him... I keep hearing the theme music to Jaws. But then again, I drink too much coffee and I'm often on edge and easily startled.

I want to write Romney off. All the positional flips, the fact that he probably ran the well dry on this fundraising cycle, but there's two things that keep me from doing so.
1) He has news anchor gravitas. Not that it matters in the real world, but TV has taught us that the appearance of heft is more important than competence, positions, etc.
2) Somebody has to win. With all the hits on the three frontrunners, it's tough for me to say anybody is out. Romney could be the survivor.

"He has news anchor gravitas..."
I've been thinking about this point. I don't deny it, but I think John Kerry had that same news anchor gravitas. The thing about appearance over substance usually boils down to the cliché, "Would you like to have a beer with the guy?"
Again, I go back to the Kerry comparison... the "lifelong" hunter, the flip flops (and Romney's are polar flips), the privileged background. Nothing alienates people more than a poser, and I think Mitt's a poser... but historically a savvy one.
I still wouldn't write off Gulliani in the primary. If the religious base stays home, the corporate/financial/tough-on-crime base may carry him.

The difference is that Romney is "snappy" unlike Kerry. The problem with Kerry wasn't so much that he was aristocratic is that he was godawful offputting boring aristocratic.
