Anybody remember "addicted to oil?"

AP Flash - "In his first State of the Union address to a Democratic-controlled Congress, President Bush will urge that gasoline consumption be slashed by 20 percent, the White House said." (by 2017)

I just want to take everybody back one year to when Bush uttered the phrase "addicted to oil" and all the pundits wet themselves over his "boldness." The crux of his SOTU plan was to cut mideast oil exports by 75%.

But what seems to be forgotten is that the very next day the Energy Secretary and National Economic Advisor came out and said, "the president didn't mean it literally."

He has done almost nothing he discussed in any of his SOTU speeches (Mars, bitches,) so why does he still get credible coverage of this 20% pledge?

  • Bush's credibility is nil. Even the kneejerk conservatives who voted red in both of the last elections are staring at him in disbelief, the slow recognition that his tenure has been a disaster only now dawning. I have the strong feeling that we're just going through the motions with this State of the Union speech.

I have felt all along, through 6 incomprehensible years with this guy, that he is a front man for others who wish to remain unaccountable. To imagine that he would have something constructive or even relevant to say? -- unlikely.

  • Agreed. I think the proposals are just because he is trying to take focus off Iraq.

If this White House had the choice, I don't think we'd be seeing a SOTU.

As for the "front man," I might buy that. I would say that Cheney is probably the "inside man" for that group.

  • What is bugging me about the oil proposal is the same thing that bugs me about his plan to balance the budget in 10 years. These are both things that a president does AT THE BEGINNING OF HIS TERM!

With less than two years left, NOW he wants to cut back on emmissions, increase fuel standards and balance the budget in 10 years? Why isn't anyone noticing how absurd this is? He had his chance to get these types of programs pushed through in the first six years of his term.

Instead, he conceived of a tax break for people who bought Hummers and full size trucks instead of small trucks for their business (i.e. small trucks you have to depreciate, but over a certain tonnage you can write off the whole thing at once). He doubled the national debt by running record deficits throughout his first term so that the interest alone is now nearly equal to the yearly deficit. And NOW he wants to fix it in 10 years? News flash president Bush: it is too F***ing late!!!

Sorry for the long comment, but man this really gets me.
