Picture of the Day - 3

Despite all the press focus, I'm actually more interested in what this guy has to say.

Later: Pat Buchannan just said he's seen excerpts from Webb's speech and he said it's really great.

  • It was great.

  • Yeah, his delivery was a little uneven, I'm guessing he wanted to go faster than the teleprompter, but when he got to Iraq, he was great.

And the closer was one for the ages.

""These presidents took the right kind of action for the benefit of the American people and for the health of our relations around the world. Tonight, we are calling on this president to take similar action in both areas. If he does, we will join him. If he does not, we will be showing him the way.""

  • The closing was, indeed, one for the ages.

While his delivery, as you point out, was a little herky-jerky at times, the tenor of his speech was one of confidence and resolution, not a simple tit-for-tat jab (or whine) at the president. Webb's speech came across as serious and personal, not as a politically crafted product of some strategy team... I didn't feel like I was watching a pitch-man. I never felt this way about a opposition response.

He identified challenges facing America (and Americans) and effectively told the president to lead, follow or get out of the way.
