Bush changes State of the Union comments after a threat from OPEC

I mean, c'mon, this was delivered in the State of the Union Speech less than 24 hours ago,
WASHINGTON - One day after President Bush vowed to reduce America's dependence on Middle East oil by cutting imports from there 75 percent by 2025, his energy secretary and national economic adviser said Wednesday that the president didn't mean it literally.

This is bad enough, but the truly frightening thing is not that this happened, but why this happened. Hours earlier, I ran across this in the Financial Times.
The Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries on Wednesday warned that President George W. Bush’s proposal to reduce US dependence on Middle Eastern oil could badly jeopardise needed investment in Gulf oil production and refining capacity.

You mean to tell me that Mr. Super Commander in Chief, fearless warrior, crapped his pants, because the Nigerian President made a veiled threat through OPEC?

  • "Buy our oil, or we're gonna break your fingers."

    And anyway, it's completely non-sensical. Even if we were to reduce our requirements 75%, that only really applies to the need for oil as energy. The long term need of this planet for it's petroleum reserves is for plastics and lubricants.

  • This just got to me somehow amidst the "we have to stay in Iraq for credibility" statements.

    I mean, what kind of crdibility do we have when the US president retracts a statement from his most intentional speech in less than 24 hours?

    Also, The funny thing is, pointed out in an AP fact check piece, the top four US oil suppliers are Canada, Mexico, Venezuela, and Nigeria, with the mid east proper accounting for only 20% of US imports. Now, Nigeria and Venezuela are OPEC and quite frankly, a disruption to someone who doesn't supply the US, Iran for instance, would have significant impacts on the oil price and distribution balance, but still...
