A book I would buy
Not normally a buyer of political books as most of their revelations are put forward in the prepress, I would pay good money if someone wrote a kiss and tell book about the perpetual drama and train wreck that has been the Katherine Harris Senate campaign.
After losing all of her top staff in April, and blindly maintaining that she will win, even claiming to put in $10 million of her own money, she loses a whole 'nother bunch of top staff now, in July. She trails by 33 points in the race, and, despite statements against her by major players in her own party, there have been reports as recently as last month that she honestly believes that she's going to win.
How interesting would it be to watch the details unfold as her personality becomes increasingly delusional while she continues to campaign? I would buy that book.

Nelson would be vulnerable against a competent opponent. I'm glad the RNC never found anybody else to challenge Harris in the primary, but I also wonder why they didn't. The GOP is pretty good at spotting opportunities in the electoral map and getting competent and/or well-financed people to run for those offices (think Conn - apparently the current GOP candidate is going to be pushed out of the race because of a "gambling problem" that just "came to light" and will be replaced w/ a competent, well-financed person to take advantage of the Lieberman run as a "Bullshit Moose" Independent.) Why couldn't the GOP find somebody to take out Harris? Was her name recognition simply too high? Does she have compromising pictures of Jeb? Or am I giving too much credit to the GOP political apparatus?

I hadn't seen the "gambling problem" story yet. Because there has been so much blog stuff on Lieberman/Lamont, I have been consciously avoiding it. (you can get better coverage elsewhere.)
They desperately tried to get someone to run against her in the primary, but no big hitter really stepped up. I'm not really too sure why, but myy guess would be that looking at the current state of things, the big hitters' selfish evaluation was that they could lose the general election, and, then because the other sen is Republican, have to wait six years for another campaign.
Why leave whatever job you're in to take that crapshoot. I think it's a result of the broader politics of the nation and the bush drag.
Again, outside my state, I haven't watched it closely, but that would be my guess.

Not only would I buy the book, I would want to meet the writer who could focus on the campaign semi seriously in the face of the surrounding nonsense.
If a writer could suspend disbelief, but not lose it; could keep a 'serious' demeanor during one on ones; breathlessly report events without falling off their desk chair laughing...
I would like to meet that person.
Come to think of it, maybe I should just visit Washington. Probably lots of them who do all that, everyday.

I'm imagining either a "Fear and Loathing" book, or maybe some sort of "gone off the rails" made for TV kinda tragedy.
I don't think you could write a serious book about this mess unless you did it as a psychological profile, which would be interesting as well.
It's just fascinating to me. The level of separation from reality, and her newfound faith in Jesus, just make he an interesting character to me.

I loved Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail of 72 when I first read it. It's been a while but you got me thinking maybe I should get another copy and see if it still holds up.

If there ever was a campaign calling for Gonzo Journalism, Devout Christian Katherine Harris is it.
Thinking about it probably would be pretty interesting to reread with the parallels to present.
