Rove, Leopold, etc.
Talk Left has the latest on the Leopold story that Rove has already been indicted, with a pretty plausible theory of a two part indictment, perjury, offer a plea deal, then go back for obstruction. The most interesting statement is "Jason says he confirmed the story with more than 2 sources. He says Knight- Ridder, MSNBC and ABC News now have one source for the story."
I don't want to get too far into the Leopold controversy because it's a sidetrack from the real story which is/would be the indictment of the third most powerful man in the administration. But I thought I'd link this post because it's an exhaustive look at the state of play.
My general sense is that if his story proves to be wrong, which it hasn't yet, Jason Leopold was set up. I believe he has honestly reported what he was told.
Because, let's remember what the Plame investigation is all about, breaking the law retaliating against somebody who wrote stuff the administration didn't like. And what is the administration involved in right now? A Nixonesque effort to stop leaks at any cost.
So, if you want to look at bad history, Jason Leopold isn't the only one. This White House outed a covert agent working on critical WMD issues in Iran to silence a previous critic. (And let's not forget McCain's illegitimate black baby, the swiftboaters, or the bug Rove planted in his own office in the Texas governor's race. Or as a direct parallel, how Dan Rather was burned neutralizing the ANG story. We still don't exactly know how that went down.) Quite frankly, it's Leopold's bad history that would make him a prime candidate for this sort of setup.
That's my sense of it, I have no proof on either side, but in my evaluation of things, the Rove/White House side has alot to gain by Leopold getting burned and he has very little to gain by lying. That's all if the story turns out to be untrue which we don't know yet.
But it's funny just how well this controversy has deflected all conversation away from the guilt of Rove towards Leopold's credibility. It couldn't have turned out any better if Rove had planned it himself. So, let's stop talking about Jason Leopold and return to talking about the fact that the iconic most powerful political figure in the Republican party is facing indictment, trial, and jail time. That should be the story.
Update: Mark Ash at truthout wrote this among other things today supporting the Leopold story, (It's worth a read if you're tracking this.)

We can now report, however, that we have additional, independent sources that refute those denials by Corallo and Luskin. While we had only our own sources to work with in the beginning, additional sources have now come forward and offered corroboration to us.
He also indirectly makes the point that if the indictment is in fact sealed, we may not know about it for a long time.

I'm waiting for Jason to reveal his source *if* he was burned.

It does smell a bit like a Rovian ratfucking, Mike, but there's something not quite right about Leopold's story too (though as you say, it could be his sources who misled him.)
Nonetheless you're right to take the story away from Leopold and put it back on Rove. So how about this question? Why is Rove suddenly so visible these days?
Not only was the AEI speech covered like a fucking Tom Cruise movie opening, but Rove managed to make CNN today by showing up to Capitol Hill for a "10-12 minute" visit with GOP members for a discussion on the preznit's comprehensive immigration bill.
When was the last time you can remember a high profile Rove visit to Capitol Hill? When was his last high profile speech? January 20th of this year at the RNC winter meeting, I think. Now suddenly we get a televised Capitol Hill appearance AND a high profile speech - all in less than 48 hours.
There's a message being sent. I don't know what it is - maybe he saying he's still okay despite the legal trouble, maybe he's trying to get as much done as he can before an indictment, maybe he's already made a deal and he wants to make it look like everything is normal. Maybe he's just fucking with us. But this whole week is weird. First the Leopold articles on Fri and Sat, now the high profile Rove appearances on Mon and Wed.
Thoughts anyone?

Greyhair, let's say he does reveal his sources. If he doesn't have them on tape or something written by them and they issue flat denials, then what?
They spoke to him on condition of anonymity, do you think they're going to do him the favor of backing him up after he outs them?
Reality based, yeah, the one other time Rove I remember Rove becoming suddenly visible was mid/early January when the White House was trying to put forth their "fresh start" new agenda for the year. Remember the pathetic Bush metaphor of clearing brush showing up everywhere?

And, I fully agree that the sudden Rove presence is a ploy. I think it's an effort to play down Plame and show a whitehouse "looking ahead." Personally I don't read too much into it, because there are just as many reports of Rove being worried behind the scenes. And, if they did screw Leopold, the high profile appearances just put some nails in.
But, in the big picture, I don't think it affects the investigation at all.
In my opinion, the WhiteHouse's overarching goal right now is to return to politics of division, to get America arguing with itself so that all the anger will be directed away from the administration and towards the other side. Immigration, gay marriage. These aren't policies they really expect to win on, but they have to tamp down(or misdirect) the anger before they can start to rebuild the president's numbers. Their main goal at this point is to get Rove out of the news by getting him into the news, brilliant really, and attacking all critics of the administration. Notice how suddenly they're warning of "Speaker Pelosi."
Rove out and about is a ploy. Did he do this in 2002, go on all the news channels to "talk strategy?" No, he plotted behind the scenes. This is obviously a set up, and it gets a certain image of him, laughing, smart, hard working before the public.
Kind of all around your question, but that's my answer.

Mike, it's a good answer you gave - they're trying to get Rove out of the news by putting him in it makes a lot sense actually.
I saw the Ash statement. Truthout is definitely not backing down on this. If anything, they're upping the ante by saying they've got more confirmation of the story, even if it is off-the-record kind.
As you say, if the indictment's sealed, we won't know about it for a long time. So is that why Rove is suddenly in sight so much? Does he know that we won't know anything definite in the case for a long time and he's playing some games with us? It sure fits his motif.

That's a fair guess. I don't know.
Again, I think Fitzgerald is a dead honest figure, and doesn't really care about the politics unless it affects his work.
