Quickhits

A somewhat poorly structured NYTimes piece on AG Eric Holder trying to undo the Bush admin's damage to the Civil Rights division. (I say "poorly structured" because the damage and solutions are not very clearly expressed.)

(ABC) An ex-Vice President no longer receiving intelligence briefings makes some statements that we're "less safe," and it's news everywhere for days.

The current National Security Adviser says the US is actually taking out more terrorists, and it doesn't even get noticed.

And, (BBC) The EU is phasing out incandescent lightbulbs by 2012.

  • Regarding Cheney, fear, terror, and American media... I think this speaks volumes as to the damage modern American journalism has done to our ability to self govern... (An ignorant and misinformed electorate is incapable of self governance and, indeed, is fodder for manipulation by the powerful... not to put too fine a point on it. :) )

  • I'll give you that.

Opinions are judged by who they come from, not whether they're true.

  • It's extraordinary the hold Cheney has on the American psyche. I see it as a sort of John Wayne thing.

  • Yeah, but I would choose another figure. I don't think he has the same goodwill of a John Wayne.

  • Right. I can't see John Wayne using torture but it's a twisted version of that paternal protective thing.

  • Cheney and John Wayne would destroy this country if they had the chance. JW produced "The Green Berets" with his own money because anyone with half a brain told him to get lost. He didn't really care about reality just "the American Way" and consequences(reality) be damned.

If they were both at the top at their game at the same time we'd be screwed. A propagandist idiot and someone as crazy at the levers of power.

  • Gotta admit, I'm not a John Wayne fan or expert, but it's my sense that part of John Wayne's image is honor, and the key to Cheney's position is that he's willing to do the ugly unlike everyone else.

(I'm not going to spend all day arguing John Wayne.)
