If the CIA had simply "disappeared" and tortured Khalid Sheik Muhammed off the books, I don't think much of anyone would be complaining.
The political problem is that they tried to broaden and institutionalize torture, rendition, and harsh treatment.
(I'm not making a statement on torture, but on the politics.)

Morality is for liberals. They wanted to show that torture is effective.

I dunno. I think "torture is effective" plus executive power claims....
My point was that I think we'd have all accepted it if the "mastermind of 9-11" was taken in a backroom and beaten, but the prospect of a policy of beating people is a whole different thing.
