The US threatens Iran (indirectly)

A new, rather interesting lever against Iran is unveiled by Hillary Clinton.
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says the US is prepared to bolster the defence of its Gulf allies if Iran develops a nuclear weapons programme.

At this point, it's a little unclear what that means whether it's arms sales or a South Korea/Japan style extension of US commitment, but it is an interesting threat to alter the Iranian defense equation.

  • Isn't this just another way of saying if Iran uses a nuclear weapon they will be annihilated?

  • Sort of. I think the nuclear umbrella is part of the inference, but they're also keeping it intentionally vague so that the "could includes" might have some influence.

("Could include" arms, weapons, nuclear help, missile help to regional rivals.)

  • Whether they want help or not I guess.

  • Oh, they'll always take US weapons and tech.

  • Iran's neighbors include:Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, countries where the US already has a military presence (Or, in the case of Pakistan, will have one very soon). Allies=countries we've already invaded and taken over, plus the Sauds, and of course, the major regional war monger, Israel.
At least Clinton has backed off from the already disproven "Iran has a weapons program" to if they develop a weapons program.

  • I'm pretty sure she was talking about Saudi, Jordan, and the others in that Sunni block.
