Political bits
(USNews) Gingrich is stepping up efforts to try and seize as many "Christian conservatives" as he can while everyone else is in disarray.
(HartfordCourant) Countrywide bent the rules so that Banking Chairman Chris Dodd could get his sweet mortgage deals. (Doesn't mean Dodd knew that, but it is coming down on him right now.)
(TPM/CNN) Norm Coleman's lawyer concedes they'll lose the court case and tries to make the statement that the loss was part of a plan for an appeal.
And, (TimesPicayune) Take notice that Bobby Jindal is seriously trying to raise national money for his Governor's race. (He's making the contacts and building his donor base now.)

wrt Gingrich, from the link:
"You've had such rising hostility to religious belief that I wanted to reach broadly into the country and dramatically raise public awareness of threats to religious liberty."
He's saying the right things to the right people, certainly. Play to the "persecution complex" of the fundamentalists - check. Conflate "religious liberty" with the 'right' to force your religious beliefs on those who don't hold them - check. Conflate "raising public awareness" with speaking to a select group who already agree with you - check.
Unfortunately for Gingrich, the demographics aren't on his side and he has nothing of substance to offer the fundamentalists beyond moral support and shared outrage. The people who call the shots for the fundamentalists are very much the "what have you done for me lately?" type.
Wrt Norm Coleman, his appeal will have to essentially contend that the MN electoral system is so profoundly and comprehensively broken that a fair election is impossible. This is the same electoral system that brought him to power (and Bachmann, too).
MN has a pretty damn good system, though. If political motivations produce a win for Coleman's appeal in federal court, then the electoral systems in many other states will be fair game for court challenges on the same grounds. In short, Coleman is poking a hornet's nest that could potentially turn 2010 into a legal nightmare.
Coleman contends that allowing different counties to employ different standards for determining the validity of absentee ballots is an equal protection violation. The trouble is, however, that this is how the vast majority of state electoral systems work. It is also how the validity of voter registrations work, as well. Thus, we could see the loser in races that aren't even close enough for a recount being held up in court based on the precedent set by Coleman's potential appellate victory.
This is a very dangerous move for such little potential benefit. It will also be very expensive for the GOP to pursue this route. In addition, the likely result of a successful appeal will be to remove thousands of ballots, which undermines the "count every vote" mantra Coleman has employed.

Yes, and it's not even about Coleman. The Republican side REALLY doesn't want that extra Franken vote in play...

Todd, it's a question of whteher he's playing for intraparty influence and power or whether he's trying to do something serious. If he's just trying to build his power base, email base, money making base, a shrinking demographic ain't great but there's still growth for him.
As for Coleman, yeah. I getr their argument, but I don't think it gets through. The appointees were willing to stick out for a President, but for a Senator who may soon after be unseated in scandal?
.....
r8r, I strongly agree with that.
