One of the points of consolation for Republicans after the 2006 and 2008 elections has been the number of Republican-held governorships. However, with the economy in such bad shape and state budget shortfalls making the usual Republican play-book untenable, these governors do not have the luxury of mere obstructionism.
The stimulus money is really helping a lot of these Republican governors out of a tough bind. Here in MN, Pawlenty was facing a huge deficit. Since his entire political identity consists of "no tax increases", that left only huge cuts; i.e political suicide.
Now, sure, some of these governors have seen fit to bite the hand that feeds them, and they will make a big show out of being "forced" to take the money. But others see that their Party has left them "hung out to dry" on the state budget issues.
If we do some kind of "return to sanity" in the GOP, I believe it will come from the governors of red states.
I'm really curious to see how the stim money stuff plays out in the next election. In Texas, Perry made the big show of refusing because he faces a credible center Republican primary challenge from Kay BAiley Hutchinson, who isn't great, but PErry is really hated here outside the far right.
On the other hand, you have the Crists and Schwarzennegger's playing centrist nice with Obama. Really, I see Crist as the only credible future threat, but the right is rejecting them from the body.
This is not the America I was brought up to believe in.
This blog seeks to highlight abuse of power, deception, corruption, and just plain bad ideas in government and corporations.
