Picture of the Day

I don't know what to make of the NYTimes story (and WaPo companion) about John McCain's relationship with this lobbyist. I just can't get past the freakiness that she looks so much like his wife, only younger.

(PS. Does anyone else find it funny that so many lefty bloggers, who presumably defended Clinton when there was so much more evidence, are jumping all over this?)

  • You know, Crusty McC really falls into that Repub m.o. of ditching the wife for the younger model. When they met, Cindy was 25 and Crusty was 43; a delta of 18 years. McCain divorced his wife of 15 years, and within 30 days was hitched to Cindy.

In fairness, Cindy and John have been married for 28 years and appear happy. Although that may just be Cindy's botox... I dunno.

  • I know the story. I'm generally going to stay away from this one unless there's alot more.

  • Why is the sex so important in this story? Isn't the real question whether he provided favors for this lobbying firm's clients in exchange for large donations? I haven't read the original story yet but I, for one, do not read the constitution to prohibit marital infedelity as a disqualifying factor for holding the office of president.

  • Oops, make that infidelity.

  • You make the big point, it well should be.

I'm surprised the NYTimes went with the story this way. Either they have more they can't print or it's pretty scummy to include the "romantic" angle.

  • I wasn't even addressing the NYT story. I was just taunting you with your discomfort with May-December marriages (e.g. Fred Thompson).

As far as the NYT story goes, I think it would have been better to just cover the ethics issues and leave the wink-wink, nudge-nudge out. Save that for a second story if necessary, but it just serves as a MAJOR distraction to the real issues here.

  • Yeah, the McCain marriage doesn't bother me as much for some reason. Maybe it's that they've been together so long. Maybe it's because they don't have a two year old kid which conjures up an image I'd rather not imagine.

As to the story, I'm holding back until we really get something unarguable. My guess is that they've got more they can't print on the romantic side, but if they don't print it we can't judge it.

The WaPo version was much more about the lobbying angle.

  • The wink-wink, nudge-nudge is what sells newspapers. A lot more people will pay attention to this story if there is some seedy, Us Weekly stuff going on more than just political favors for large donations.

It's a sleazy way to draw in the vast majority of people who either don't get or don't really care about politics.

  • Good point.
