Are we about to get new scandal on Sarah Palin?

Two odd bits in the last two days.

1) Sarah Palin cancels her CPAC appearance just two weeks away. She was certainly the top attraction, and also likely to win the straw poll, so why bow out? It's not like her to dodge attention.

2) Sarah Palin's Alberto Gonzales, a nobody she propped up in the Alaska AG post, suddenly resigns for no apparent reason.

Later: She's sending a taped message instead.

  • Maybe she's figured out how empty and meaningless that kind of ephemeral attention can really be. I'm in a philosophical mood this morning.

  • I wouldn't think so.

"Winning" CPAC is the golden route to early primary victories.

The only legit reason I can think of is that she's about to face bad budget news in her state because of oil prices and wants to appear to be working.

  • ...and she had the Republican Party in her hands for a few weeks there...

I'm so relieved this cartoon is not our vice president.

She makes John McCain look like Mount Rushmore.

  • She's that very dangerous combination of incompetent and really wanting to make decisions.

  • Perhaps elements within CPAC won't let Palin be Palin. They may want to give her a "makeover" along the lines of what the right-wing did to McCain in the presidential race, and she may not be confident in their "abilities".

  • Maybe, but she really holds their views as closely as anybody else.

You might argue that they may want a piece of her or something, but she really hews their line pretty closely.
