Thought - Change it back.

With Bush going, can we change the name of the Government Accountability Office (GAO) back to the Government Accounting Office? (Republicans hick-ishly changed the name as a 2004 election year stunt.)

I know it's not the biggest thing, but the awkwardness of it has always rubbed me like a grain of sand.

  • Thoughts of my own:

It'll be harder for Republican senators to be obstructionists not only because of their smaller numbers, but -- and probably more importantly -- they won't have the support and cover of the White House. They will be left to fend for themselves with no ass covering of "supporting the President."

So even if the numbers are 59-41, I don't think the Repubs will attempt to be as obstructionist in the 111th as they were in the 110th. And those that are -- you know, the "REAL" Republicans -- will be risking extinction.

    ---

Hillary Clinton will be more effective, and have a more individual reputation, as SoS than if she had won the White House. If she had won the presidency, not a day would go by without comparing her to Bill and his admin. Everything she did or said would be in the context of Bill; "what does Bill think of that?", "In a move contrary to her husband's admin....", "*swoosh* Tension in the Lincoln Bedroom? *swoosh* Hillary bans humidors in the West Wing!"

As SoS I think she'll be better able to carve out a proud and unique legacy. But I get it that as an historical marker, being the first woman pres (not to mention the first First Lady as pres) would have been cool, but I'm happy to not have the wall-to-wall tabloid coverage.

  • Also, for right now at least, the tone of the country is against loud obstructionist fights. That could easily change, but with everything going to crap, nobody wants to see yelling over little stuff right now.

    ....

As for Hillary, part of that is that she will be able to step into and out of the limelight as SoS in a way she couldn't have as President.

And, just remembering the "all Clinton's, all the time" from the primary, I'm kinda glad we don't have all that circus, too.
