The states, the money, and strategy.

An interesting Politico story where the local Virginia GOP is very worried about McCain winning the state. (They're so frustrated with the McCain campaign that they're talking to the press?)

The "big map" is really pressing the McCain campaign's money and allocation. I guarantee he's hearing complaints from more than just Virginia. (Wouldn't you love to see his financials?)

The Obama campaign's ability to work the "big map" coupled with the decision to go outside the public financing system may end up being the deciding strategic factor in this election.

Later: Michigan is still loudly complaining.

  • I seem to recall another post of yours some months back in which you linked to an article featuring a state GOP official bemoaning how the national campaign had taken over.

It could be a big post-election story if several state Party officials relate a tale of woe about how the McCain campaign came in with a "know-it-all" attitude and hijacked their carefully-laid plans.

Somebody is going to be the scapegoat for this failure. I predict we will see more of this kind of story in the coming weeks as more "solid" red states turn purple.

  • A taste of the schism that will split the GOP if/when they lose.

  • Yeah, I think I remember that, but I don't think it was Virginia.

And, the "spending limit story" might be one of the floated GOP excuses because it doesn't implicate anyone directly. I'm expecting them to vaguely blame "the economy," too. You can use that excuse and not anger anyone in the party.

    .....

Anon, I never know about that schism story. It was supposed to happen after the 2006 election but really didn't.

Most of the elected officials are part of several of those factions. It's really the people and single issue groups on the edges that are fracturing.
