Running other people for President
All I can figure is that, much like the Palin nomination, John McCain thinks that elevating this "Joe the Plumber" guy to national topic is better than running for President as himself.
I would guess the idea is to become "regular people by proxy," but, much like Palin, this guy isn't ready for primetime either.
But that won't stop McCain. (From a FoxNews interview with McCain this morning.)
I'm not going to waste my time detailing all the crud with this guy, but he's got skeletons, his question was apparently bogus, he's clearly a Republican, and it appears the McCain camp planned all of this ahead.
So, prop him up on the national stage, John. Bring him out to Republican applause. It's another stunt you've already pushed too far. We're just going to have to wait a few days until it blows up in your face.

"I'm probably going to call him this morning...I think we're going to be spending some time together."

Joe The Plumber, like Palin, is a fraud of normalcy. They are posers of mainstream Americanism. They are like artificial strawberry flavoring posing as real fruit.
But really, that's what this new Republican faux-Americanism is all about.
Compare these McCain "average Americans" with the five authentic Americans who spoke at the Dem convention.

That was a memorable moment I'd forgotten.
And, more broadly, no, this Joe guy's a piece of work, and McCain's put a researchers target on him. Just overnight we learned illegally registered republican, tax cheat, liar about buying the business, campaign planned and some other stuff.
Wait til they start talking to the people he knows.
He's not a politician, so every moment he's on the national stage represents a risk for McCain.

What is with it with McCain and vetting? Does he think this is 1953... where nosey newsies have to spend days poring through hardbound volumes of old court records in a dim-lit basement of the county courthouse to dig up stuff? Come on. It's embarrassing.
All kidding aside, this really does call into question his judgment. It reinforces "erratic" or at least going off half cocked. Good God, man. It's called a plan. Get one.

They can't vet people they aim as "surprises" because then it would leak. (Think Palin would be VP if the media had been given a week to report on her?)
But the "stunt making" is why this won't work.
The media won't let this pass. They're sick of McCain's stunts.
(And that's a funny clip.)
