Palin v. McCain - Or is it Romney v. Palin? (...Or even McCain v Romney?)

Treat this as rumory, but in the context of the Palin/McCain aides back and forth, this potentially adds a whole other dimension,
Former Mitt Romney presidential campaign staffers, some of whom are currently working for Sen. John McCain and Gov. Sarah Palin's bid for the White House, have been involved in spreading anti-Palin spin to reporters, seeking to diminish her standing after the election.....

Some former Romney aides were behind the recent leaks to media, including CNN, that Governor Sarah Palin was a "diva" and was going off message intentionally. The former and current Romney supporters further are pushing Romney supporters for key Republican jobs, including head of the Republican National Committee.

So, who is telling the American Spectator that? Is it true, or is it simply someone in the Palin camp trying to co-damage Romney?

Later in the same piece, someone (who knows which side) makes sure that we think Romney is the real "diva."
(Romney) has traveled little for the McCain-Palin ticket. "He said the only time he'd travel for us is if we assured him that national cameras would be there," says a McCain campaign communications aide. "He's traveled to Nevada and a couple other states for us. That's about it."

Eight days left in a Presidential campaign. This is just crazy.

  • It would more interesting if they had a real source.

Good grief Romney is standing next to McCain in Ohio this morning as we speak.

  • National cameras, right?

No coincidence that slam "leaks" right before Romney gets some national TV time.

And, as for sourcing, that's why I cited this as "rumory" and tried to paint a murky picture of who and what motivation. This is somebody's version to blame Romney, but that doesn't at all mean it's the truth.

I just kinda included it because I am unable to look away from the implosion.

  • It's an open secret that the Republican players have already moved on to 2012. Naturally, this means potential presidential candidates are engaging in premature jockeying to frame the GOP brand as well as frame their potential opponents.

Palin's been acting like she's the head of the current ticket for weeks now. And more recently has been running as if McCain were already dead and buried. Romney needs to protect his brand against the vicious and insatiable political appetites of Ms. Palin.

There will be a culture war if Obama is elected, all right. But it with be within the GOP, not in the general society.

  • Yeah, but it's trashy to be doing it in the press like this.

And, yes, as I said a week ago, Support or non-support of Sarah Palin is the dividing line in the GOP civil war.

(Also, McCain doen't pick Romney for VP, so Romney trashes Palin. Doesn't pick Crist, so Crist doesn't help in Florida. Doesn't pick Pawlenty, seen him lately?)

  • "Yeah, but it's trashy to be doing it in the press like this."

Yeah, but it's Republicans in the new age of Atwater/Gingrich/Rove. This ain't Ike. (or even Reagan).

And you're right about the Palin fissure/litmus test. That's been pretty obvious since we saw the awakening swell of wingnut, fundie enthusiasm since her selection in the first place.

  • I also wonder how much of it is "new technology," more reporters, lower threshold for publishing, etc.

Now, I gotta say, all these quotes are being dumped into mostly main stream outlets, but, four years ago, wight years ago, there was alot tighter editorial process. Not as much actually made it to ink.

    Know what I mean?

  • Yeah, but it's trashy to be doing it in the press like this.

If the goal is to get people to choose sides, then the person likely to end up on the losing team usually is the first to "go outside" with the conflict.

Everybody wants to be the first to get a story out now, accuracy be damned.

  • You make an interesting point there.

"The first to go outside loses."

I'm not sure I understand that.

For instance, in this case, the first outside was to say Palin was playing against the McCain interest. So far, that's the main storyline, so the first out is winning, no? Do you expect snapback, strength from rebuttal?

    Just looking for clarification.
