Does anyone remember that Obama attritted Clinton with money?

What sort of pressures does Obama's HUGE money pot put on the Republican side? Does the RNC try to put it's $67 million for McCain against the Obama/DNC money or do they start looking at downticket races? Do Republican donors just throw up their hands?

(PS. As Todd kinda pointed out, one of those unwritten stories of this cycle is that the GOP 527's haven't shown up for McCain.)

  • If the RNC were smart, they would abandon McCain and try to save as many House and Senate seats as they can.

Realistically, however, the campaigns for those Congressional Republicans are just mirroring the issues of the McCain campaign: taxes, patriotism, uncertainty.

That kind of thing is a losing proposition. It would work in solid "red states" to a degree, but I think Obama is giving a big boost to the down-ticket races with his registration and ground efforts. The same old approach that is losing nationally does nothing to address those coat-tails.

  • Yeah, but you can have better luck buying congressional races because you can pitch lies in lots of TV ads, and there's no one really policing that.

However, you do bring up a good point that letting the top face fall would likely have significant downballot effects.

So, they split it between the two?

Actually, what I am saying is that the down-ticket efforts on the Republican side are merely microcosms of the McCain campaign. And since the generic issues of the McCain campaign have failed to gain traction, these down-ticket efforts are also weak.

Leaving aside race, the generic issues are taxes, patriotism, and uncertainty over Democrats' motives. Of course, the Democratic candidates down-ticket do not have Obama's Teflon, but these just aren't very compelling points in a year when the Republican brand is toxic.

So it's entirely possible that the RNC could dump their money into these races and get very little in return.

The 527 ads are even worse. They are 'cookie-cutter' spots with the same message for every race and the candidate pasted in at the end. No mention of local issues. The same approach in red states as in blue states. No co-ordination with the candidate. And they are repeated until people tune them out.

  • I agree the classic issues seem to be falling empty, but again, you can lie alot more on TV in House races.

"Did you know that Rep. X supported sex ed for kindergateners" is alot more effective on the local level.

And, I'm amazed at the low spending of the GOP 527's. More than an unfocused message, I think it's the lack of money and airtime that's killing their effect.

We're seeing lots of 527 web ads and small release looking for amplifying free coverage, but we're not seeing that many substantial buys of actual airtime.
