Observations
Marc Ambinder has a very interesting list of what we know, don't know, and assume about the choice of Sarah Palin, but what really caught me was this under "it seems to be true,"
(See below for an arguable example of this.)
Also, interesting from FirstRead,
There are senior-level advisers in the campaign who opposed the pick and who are leaking details about the vetting process to undercut the pick.
(See below for an arguable example of this.)
Also, interesting from FirstRead,
And judging by the reception she gets, there could be a very real debate on the following question: Whose Republican Party is this -- John McCain's or Sarah Palin's? Talk to the GOP delegates here and it's no contest. This is Palin's party; McCain's just the surprisingly cool guy who "got it" more than these folks thought..

Very interesting. She could well put Old John in the shade.

Ms. Palin's selection draws no voters away from Obama. In fact her selection has helped disgruntled Hillary supporters realize what's at stake here, thus firming up Obama's base.
It's self-evident that Ms. Palin's selection has fired up the more radicle fringes of the GOP. But despite all the goose-stepping happy talk among the Republican spokes people, her selection has run against the grain of the more traditional wing of the party. Her only value to McCain is to sure up what should already be solid Republican voters already! And even there, she's not a broad favorite -- when you remove the smokescreen of party-talk.
I predict that In a few weeks, Palin herself will no longer be a distraction. She will have by then been vetted by the media and the opposition. At that point I predict McCain -- and his judgement --will be seen as "risky."

We do know that "popular" Governor Palin was elected with a 48% of the vote. (More people voted for someone OTHER than Palin in 2006)
We do know that the voter turnout in 2006 (AK) was about 50% and that Palin was elected by 25% of registered voters in AK.
We do know that Sarah Palin is were she is because 114,000 people in the country's third least populace state. That's 0.6% of the people who voted for Obama in the primaries.
Talk about plucked from obscurity.

Anon, at least in the hall.
....
EPM, Right. Palin draws no voters from the left, and I would argue from the center. It was obviously targeted to fire up the base and up their turnout.
And she is "defense" on Republican women who were showing some sympathy towards the Dems economic message.
And, I get your point on the election numbers, but I don't know enough to really judge Alaska politics.
