"It's sad, really....."
I wish someone on the Obama side would say something along these lines,
"It's sad, really..... John McCain has made his career standing up for what he thought was right. He served with such tremendous honor in the military, has such a long, distinguished tenure in the Senate, and to see him brought so low.....
It depresses me that such a man, faced with being a little down in the polls, would abandon all that, would abandon his ethics, and sell his soul to his campaign operatives. It's desperate, and it's very, very sad...."
(I think pity would work on McCain. I think it would hit him personally pretty deep and would alos unleash what seems like a media feeling about all the new attacks.)

I think this is happening, but it's not coming directly from the Obama campaign. It's coming from large segments of the traditional media -- network reporters, pundits, editorials, and op-eds. As long as the general tide of opinion is blowing back at McCain, why jump into the fray yourself? Why turn it into a he-said-she-said? Let the opinion-makers criticize the McCain campaign... you can stay positive and above the brouhaha.
If the slime machine start to gain traction with the public -- and you know the media are just two beat away from, "well, is there really anything to these allegations?" -- then I think you'll see the Obama camp swing into action directly and forcefully.
One thing is for sure, the media are like sharks to blood when it comes to taking an Obama snippet out of context and trying to turn it against him. So even if they think McCain as a whiner, it's Obama they think needs to be taken down a peg or two... and you're already hearing the "uppity" language creep into the conversation...

I agree. That sentiment is out there just lying there. But the media needs a "hook" so that they can talk about it. They need some excuse to write the story.
I'm not saying it should come from the Obama camp directly, but some big name long term senator with name ID, like Biden.
And, I saw a post somewhere this morning that went to the Thesaurus entry for "uppity" and highlighted all the synonyms that have been used against Obama.

You have to be careful with that stuff. McCain could just wind up with the sympathy vote.

I dunno. That's pretty hard to pull off, and even trickier to time.
I think the media calling McCain's campaign de facto over because of his sleaze would do more.
