You think the Obama campaign is gonna play nice?
Take a look at what happened to the former Clinton supporter who "initiated" a pro-McCain event on Saturday. Today it comes out that she was a key figure in an effort to keep the Sally Hemmings (black) faction out of the Thomas Jefferson Family Association back in 2003.
This certainly could have been independent reporting in this age of Google, but the timing does make it feel like somebody wanted to whack Ms. Abeles.
(In this year, if you're going to go after Democrats, you better be damn sure there's no hint of sex or race statements in your past.)
The wife of a Thomas Jefferson family association official said Friday that she masqueraded as a 67-year-old black woman on an Internet chat room in a bid to keep descendants of a reputed Jefferson mistress out of this weekend's family reunion.
"It might have been somewhat unethical," said Paulie Abeles of Washington, D.C., who participated for eight months in the Yahoo! message board created for relatives of Jefferson slave Sally Hemings.
"It might have been childish, but I really think I was working in the best interest of the majority of the family members to make the reunion a calm and civilized gathering," she said.

This doesn't have anything to do with "playing nice." This is about calling out the ethics of Ms. Abeles. Whereas the RWSM tied to curse Obama for what OTHER people said, this is more like Russert challenging a person with her own words and deeds.
The McCain campaign seeks to paint Obama as radical and out of touch by showing that even mainstream "Hillary supporters" like Ms. Abeles (and good Dems like Lieberman) think Obama is radical and dangerous for America. The fact that these "Hillary supporters" are really just closet white-priders is not play nice. Shining a light on these people cannot be certain cannot be cast as not playing nice.
(How long before we start hearing about why Fiorina is a former HP CEO? She should rightly be credited as disgraced from CEO, have had to resign due to unethical and illegal spying on board members.)
Playing nice doesn't mean your playing like a patsy.

Oh, see, I see this very differently. Ms. Abeles is just some low level lackey who was trying to blow up her own importance, and somebody thought she ought to get whacked for it.
I don't see this about McCain at all. To me, it's an internal discipline matter and a warning of what someone more high profile might get if they shout Hillary supporters for McCain.
And, the beauty is that Abeles is low enough to get whacked without any cost.

I see. Re-reading the Politico piece, I see your point. I thought it was the McCain camp making a big deal about a "split" in the Dem party. It seems this is, as you said, some anti-Obama pseudo Dem shooting her mouth off.
So, yeah, I guess I see the hard-ass, zero tolerance (not nice) your talking about regarding public "Hillary supporter" defections.

Yeah. It's also important to note that this conference call was a collection of small local officials, not anybody real.
