Clintonians for McCain

I really don't think that the McCain campaign believes they will be able to gain support from that many Clinton supporters, but I do think they want to keep the narrative of an angry and divided Democratic party alive for as long as they can..... for as long as the media will ignore the polling and carry the story.

PS. Notice that Fiorina was "wooing" Clinton supporters on a McCain "virtual town hall." I'm sure the McCain website is a hotspot hangout for disaffected Clinton supporters.

  • Great point. It just doesn't make sense that Clinton supporters will turn to McCain against their own best interests - not many of them, anyway.

  • It's always been my sense that if they're going to protest vote, they'd likely go to Nader or Green Party, however, by the time the passions really rise by fall, I think that will be a very, very small number.

  • These "town hall meetings" are completely staged affairs. The questions are pre-selected, and the seating is pre-arranged to ensure that the cameras will see the kind of people the campaign wants to project.

Thus, it's interesting that the McCain campaign has twice now placed alleged female McCainocrats, complete with signs, in the front rows of the "town hall meetings". I wouldn't be surprised if these women are simply Republicans playing a role in the McCain campaign's script. It's obviously an image that they want to perpetuate.

That said, the polling just doesn't back up this contention. And whenever the media covers these women and questions them, it's pretty clear that these are Republicans playing Democrat for the day. Yet more Astroturf from McCain.

  • I knew the audiences were invitation picked, but I didn't know the questions were screened.

As for seating, whether they are legitimate or not, of course the McCain camp is going to place them in the front. Every campaign does that.

Personally, I do believe there are people out there carrying so much emotion that they're saying they'll vote for McCain. The question to me is the accurate representation. Quoting three people makes it sound broad when in fact those may be the only three people, you know?

The media likes this story so if they have to dig/misrepresent a little to get it, they will.

And it's coming back at the convention for sure.

  • And it's coming back at the convention for sure.

That's fairly good news, actually. It will really increase the profile and coverage of the event. It's also doomed to failure for the HRC supporters.

If these women (and it's almost entirely women) are still so outraged in two months' time, then nothing that happens at the convention will change their minds. They will fight and lose, and keep that chip on their collective shoulders.

If the Party gives in to this tactic, then every candidate's supporters will use it in every future nomination race, and it will be a disaster. They are thus demanding the destruction of the Party, and the Party will have to get along without them.

  • Again, I think I was inexact. I don't mean the "I'll vote for McCain will be back," I don't think that's much of an issue, but, what I meant to say is that the media's coverage of the "divided" Democrats will definitely be back at the convention.
