Classic GOP. McCain has flipped on everything under the sun, and,
Out of the candidate's mouth.
Hours after sparring with Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama over immigration, Sen. John McCain told a fundraiser in Kentucky Saturday night, “Senator Obama’s word cannot be trusted”.
Out of the candidate's mouth.

It's beginning to look like this will be McCain's campaign trademark: specific messages to local audiences that conflict with his specific messages to other audiences.
Again, this is a sign of a 1950's mindset in which it was unlikely that anyone would put together the disparate dots and show the resulting conflicted picture. The internet has changed that, and the MSM is now part of the internet. Everything is now "national". He can't rely on a free pass forever, and it won't take much effort to show the multiple McCain's.
Beyond that, it's an issue of McCain's own credibility. This isn't some kind of policy difference or scandal. He's simply making an assertion (before an audience of the faithful) that Obama is untrustworthy, based on nothing more substantial than his own impression.
While McCain may have more credibility than the GOP in general, it's fragile. I think that Republicans are dramatically over-estimating their credibility with the public, and the down-ticket races seem to be little more than an appeal to "trust me".
It's not their strong suit. They are merely the default alternative for those afraid of Obama once you get beyond the faithful into independents.

I agree. I think that's why he's always been good as "the underdog," because he's been able to change that message place to place without as much attention.
As for the assertion without evidence? That's why the post is titled Peckerwood.
