The new Republican minority

The USAToday has a piece that I think typifies where the Republicans are. Bill Frist and Rick Santorum, now out of office, are still collecting pretty big money for their PAC's. The thing is, they're not actually giving any of it to Republican candidates.

There is something of an "every man for himself" quality to this year's GOP. Look at the incredible difficulties of the NSRC and the NRCC in gathering funds from their Congressional brethren.

Also in USAToday, the NRCC tries to explain why they keep losing.

  • In the near-long term, the issue of redistricting will almost certainly prove to be a crushing blow to the GOP. Here in Minnesota, the GOP Reps are in bulletproof gerrymandered districts, and I hardly believe our state is alone in this phenomenon.

The NRCC is exceptionally spot on in it's advice to "localise" campaigns. For too long now, Republicans have relied on nationally-oriented "cookie-cutter" ads that are completely generic, in which the candidate's face and name merely fill in the appropriate blanks. In reality, it's movement conservatism that has a bad name at the moment, not the GOP specifically. It's the GOP's blind and dogged embrace of movement conservatism that has tarnished it's "brand".

Of course, the GOP has devoted itself for the past ten years to purging itself of independent, creative thought and constructive dissent. It's unclear to me where any internal change can come from. They've gone out of their way to select candidates who are essentially partisan robots only capable of following orders and reading scripts, while surrounding themselves with yes men and sycophants. This works great when you are on top, but it's a big liability when you are behind.

  • I'm in Texas where they did that really rare, mid decade redistricting which seemed like such a good idea at the time setting up a ton of 53/47 seats, but this year, with the tide, it may cost alot.

And they are all in an "everyman for himself mode," and localization is one way to pull that off. I'm just a little amazed at the broad fear, that the longer term warhorses aren't donating to the RNCC.
