Picture of the Day - 2

This story has become huge in China.
CHENGDU, China - A Chinese policewoman is contributing to the country’s massive earthquake relief effort in a very personal way -- by breastfeeding eight babies.....

The woman from the quake-ravaged town of Jiangyou has just had a child herself, the Western Urban Daily said.

She is nursing the children of three women who were left homeless by the quake and are too traumatised to give milk, as well as five orphans, the report said.

The babies who lost their parents have been put in an orphanage which does not have powdered milk, it said.

  • You'll be hearing from the DoJ, and possibly Joe Lieberman, for posting this sort of pornographic filth...

Where's John Ashcroft when you need him!?

Seriously, this is a heartwarming story of compassion and selfless giving. Good find.

  • Oh yeah.

This is the face of the relief. One of the underwritten stories is that significant numbers of average Chinese citizens have flowed into the region to help. It's become a story all its own.

This imagery is one that strengthens both the sterngth opf the "common people" angle, and the the police uniform makes it about the government.

This is likely to be the face of the relief effort. This is China's collective self image of the relief.

  • "One of the underwritten stories is that significant numbers of average Chinese citizens have flowed into the region to help."

    How very.... "American."

I remember some years back, after an earthquake in Japan, western reporters were surprised at how the Japanese didn't rally to the challenge, but rather were totally dependent on the government rescue effort.

  • Right. It's an unexpected story that represents something of a new China.

And, it's not being done against the government because of a perception that they're doing a bad job in any way, it's a sort of new nationalism.

  • Good point.

There's been fairly open criticism of local official, while not blaming the system or the party. Political systems aside, this is an indication of a society the feels empowered and, dare I say, free. No, not by Western democratic standards, but this ain't Mao's China....

I wonder what the next 10 years will bring?

  • Exactly, tied in with the nationalism of the olympics and the booming economy and hopefulness of China's rise.....
