Cash on hand.
Ten days ago I commented on the seemingly low cash on hand figures for the Republicans just 90 days before the primaries start. (Giuliani $12 million, Romney $9 million, Thompson less than that.)
Well, today we get to peek in the Democrats' pockets....
That's quite a gap, no?
Also: (AP) Republican detail on fundraising. Romney spent $21 million in the third quarter.
(As a reminder, "primary money" is money that can be spent up until the nominating conventions in August/September.)

Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton ended September with more money in the bank than rival Barack Obama, holding $35 million cash on hand for the presidential primary contests to his $32 million.
That's quite a gap, no?

Clinton has >10% more than Obama in cash on hand. Giuliani has 30% more than Romney.
The second place Dem candidate has 267% more than the first place Republican candidate.
What does this tell us?

I think it speaks to the "enthusiasm" of the parties.
It's certainly possible that the GOP may make up alot of that money once a candidate is chosen, but since the Dems have historically always been behind in fundraising, the numbers this year all the way down to congressional fundraising are very notable.

I also wonder what we're going to see with regard to "issue" group, 527 ads as we get into the heat of the '08 season. The despicable Swift Boaters got a lot of mileage for very little dough, just for being outrageous. It didn't matter that their claims were bogus... the well was poisoned over and over by the corporate media's constant regurgitation.
My point is, those wingnuts are still out their and while they may not be contributing to a particular candidate (or the GOP) there is a pool of money to be tapped for nefarious political activity.

I fully agree, and the Swiftboaters were a very small group moneywise.
There are some big, big donors out there who can and likely will pour millions into 527's if they think it will make a difference, but most of these guys won't pour in if it's a losing effort.
I think that's the key. If it doesn't look like it will reap benefit, the 527 money may sit on the sidelines as well.
(And, just as a general point, I think that if the election looks close, the Republican candidate will definitely have enough direct cash.)

The 527s are negative driven. It won't matter who the GOP candidate is, we will see buckets of hate money flowing to vile groups bent on destroying the Dem candidate. I don't think, as you seem to, that these givers are bet-hedgers. These are not like the Wall St. crowd. These are the martyrs of indecency.

I wasn't trying to say that the GOP candidate means anything in this equation. There's certainly going to be 527 attacks, but I think the amount of money that might flow in will be related to how close the polling is.
There're enough ideological big GOP donors out there to fund whatever they want, but I wonder if they'll spend that money if the cause is already perceived to be lost.
They're ideologues, but at a certain point, that's just lost money. You know?
(I'm making kind of a moot argument here because I don't expect the polling spread to be the 10+ points for these guys to sit it out, but if there is a big gap.....)
