A plot to kill Putin?

This is interesting.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has been told about a plot to assassinate him during a visit to Iran this week, a Kremlin spokeswoman said Sunday....

Interfax news agency, citing a source in Russia's special services, said suicide terrorists had been trained to carry out the assassination.

A spokesman for Iran's foreign ministry, Mohammad Ali Hosseini, denied any such plot had been uncovered, characterizing the news as disinformation spread by Iran's adversaries.

The plot is attributed to Chechens.

  • I particularly liked Putin saying something like... if I stayed home every time I got a death threat, I'd never leave the house.

    What a tough-guy.

  • I haven't been able to discern the politics of this release. Did the Russians let it out to show that Putin goes to Iran in spite of the threats, or did the US or someone seed the story to discredit Iran, or did it just leak out of the Russian military.

This is pretty top secret stuff, especially suince they haven't caught the guys, so a casual leak is, I think, unlikely.

  • Man, if you can't figure out who leaked it and why, I haven't got a chance......

..... maybe the Iranians to give themselves some cover, just in case?

    No way.

Maybe it isn't an intentional leak, but more akin to a bomb-threat (i.e. empty threat).

  • I just don't know. Working backwards, it could be used to emphasize the importance of the Putin trip to Iran since he's still going (from the Russian side.)

Or, it could be used to reflect terrorists in or against Iran, depending on how it is spun.

Or, it could be used to make Putin appear less popular (after he "faced" Gates and Rice.)

Or, it could be used to bolster that Russia faces terrorists, too, giving Putin domestic strength.

    I just don't know.

  • Kind of a damp squib though anyway don't you think? Surely any foreign leader going anywhere these days faces a terrorist threat.

  • Yeah. So why did this become front [page?
