Political bits

From Rawstory's coverage of the Al Gonzales hearing today,
(Sheldon Whitehouse) then pointed to a May 4, 2006 memorandum signed by Gonzales which showed that the Office of the Vice President had been granted parallel privileges with the Executive Office of the President on communicating directly with the Justice Department's staff on criminal and civil matters.

"What - on earth - business does the Office of the Vice President have in the internal workings of the Department of Justice with respect to criminal investigations, civil investigations, and ongoing matters?" the Senator asked.

Gonzales was stumped, "As a general matter, I would say that's a good question."

That would give Cheney's office access to the updates on cases at the very moment that Karl Rove was on the indictment bubble and Libby was doing pretrial procedurals. (That is a good question!)

(ThinkProgress) Also at the hearing, Arlen Specter vaguely threatened Al Gonzales with a Special Prosecutor. (Big headlines, but Specter will wuss out like he always does.)

(AP) Fred Thompson shakes up campaign staff. (Trouble in paradise for the still unannounced Thompson?)

(Politico) Another look at the Dem fundraising advantage.

And, I thought this bit on the Daily Show was pretty funny.

  • I once say a singer try to hold a note as long as possible without taking a breath. I think Thompson is trying to run a campaign as long as possible without having to follow FEC rules. Is the shake up just a shell game to avoid FEC compliance? An exercise in "exploring" a possible run?

Like all things Republican these days, this spitting in the eye of law and order (pun intended) is approaching the absurd.

Of course I'm hoping Larry Flint has Thompson's phone number from a certain lady's little black book. That would be interesting.

  • I don't know what the Thompson game is. I remember rumors out of his organization that he was going to announce in March, April, June, July, and now August.

I think it's partially about the fundraising trick, but I also think part of it is laziness and part fear.

He's already missing his window in a sense. There was a bunch of excitement around his earlier rumored entry, but he didn't capitolize on that. Now his numbers are starting to back off making the early questioning and presentation much more difficult.

  • Interesting insights into Thompson. He doesn't seem to be camera shy, or microphone shy; always ready with a pithy, over drawled comment.

In music, I've often said that everyone wants to play an instrument, but very few people want to LEARN to play and instrument. Perhaps Thompson is like this about the presidency. He'd love to BE president, he just doesn't want to RUN for president. Is that kinda what you're saying?

  • Funny you should say that. I spent four years learning guitar. I got pretty good, but I quit when I realized I wanted to be a guitarist, not actually play guitar.

About Thompson, I don't know. That laziness tag goes back to his Senatorial run, and it hung with him about his work level in the senate.

His early travel schedule doesn't seem to indicate a great desire to do the long everyday trips necessary to do the fundraisers and small appearances.

Have to wait and see, I guess.
