Is it any wonder diplomacy is failing?

If this is verified as printed on the Washington Post's front page, this would be a very clear and direct violation of the Hatch Act, but let's not forget the bigger picture.

US diplomacy around the world is in the crapper with massive blowback effects, and this administration is asking State Department personnel to focus instead on electing Republicans.
White House aides have conducted at least half a dozen political briefings for the Bush administration's top diplomats, including a PowerPoint presentation for ambassadors with senior adviser Karl Rove that named Democratic incumbents targeted for defeat in 2008 and a "general political briefing" at the Peace Corps headquarters after the 2002 midterm elections.

(And please note that this isn't some ancient transgression. The last of these meetings cited took place Jan 4., 2007..... and Sarah Taylor was there, too.)

  • Two things:

    1) The American public doesn't care.
    2) The Republicans in congress are pro-party and anti-American and will throw sand in the workings of democracy and justice.

Ergo: Bush-Reich continues to rise, and America continues to sink.

(I've said it before, the consolidation of power we now see in the "unary executive" and how it is coming about (capitulating partisan enablers), bears more than a passing resemblance to the rise of the Third Reich. Again, not with regard to genocidal, anti-semitic death camps, but certainly with regard to totalitarianism and anti-democracy (or quasi democracy; that is rigged "democracy").)

  • For the reason you note, I always shy away from Nazi comparisons, but the broader echoes to the foundations of fascism are fairly unmistakable.

The interesting thing to me is how it's playing out now. Fascist movements survive on waves of authority worshipping poular support.

But this administration has largely lost that fervor or support.

What happens when the ideological "brownshirts" talk radio, etc, begin to peel away from the movement? They are critical to instilling the movement with a veneer of popular support.
