Political bits

Sens. Feinstein and Schumer just said they will push for a no confidence vote on Alberto Gonzales. (Later: Video.)

(AP) Arlen Specter predicts that Gonzales will have to quit. "I think when our investigation is concluded, it'll be clear even to the attorney general and the president that we're looking at a dysfunctional department which is vital to the national welfare."

The LATimes suggests that McCain is too old. Probably as importantly, the story is reprinted in New Hampshire's top paper.

(CNN) Responding to a Senate subpoena, the DoJ says they don't have Rove's emails, Rove's lawyer must have them.

(AP) Supposedly, a deal has been reached on immigration. (I'll be curious how the Republican candidates' respond.) (LATER: McCain for it, Romney against.)

Hotline has some bad polling for Giuliani. Romney is climbing in NH and Iowa and most of that is coming out of Giuliani's support.

And,
How close was Bush to calling Tony Blair a "poodle" today?
I do congratulate the Prime Minister for being a -- when he gets on a subject, it's dogged.

  • No Confidence vote: Is that like a non-binding referendum... sense of the Senate? It's not like it'll bring down the government as in a parliamentary system. Right? Even with a Repub revolt by a few key senators, Bush seems to cling to Gonzo like a baby to a security blanket.

The NH paper (a conservative paper ironically called the Union Leader) will probably come out for Romney. Just a hunch. It's probably an editorial decision to put negative news about other Repubs above the fold at this point. But yes, the tide has turned on McCain.

Any immigration deal that does not include concentration camps, branding, or leg irons will be painted as amnesty by racist zenophobes. Not that illegal immigration isn't a problem that needs serious attention. The Dems should sell this as a security bill... bringing light to the dark corners of undocumented immigrations so that only the real bad guys will be hiding in the shadows.

Bush/Blair: I just don't understand Tony. If this were any other couple, er, pair, I'd be thinking something very Brokeback Mountain was going on just under the radar. Tony just can't quit Bush (oooo. that sounds bad).

  • Yeah, definitely non-binding, but another lever. Everytime Gozales is mentioned badly in the press, that statement of no confidence would be brought up.

You're the NH guy, not me, but the choice to reprint that piece of all the other political reporting, did feel of a choice to tarnish McCain.

On immigration, the southern strategy comes back to bite the Republicans. Targeting and motivating the bigot vote is very easy, but their bigotry is a core belief and thus hard to work around.

And on Bush/Blair, let's not forget that Blair was rumored to have been assured a spot in the Carlyle Group.

  • Regarding Blair - Carlyle Group. Are you serious! No shit! That's freaking unbelievable... no wait... it's 2007. Totally believable.

I can only hope Blair's disorder is a personal one, and is not indicative of the zeitgeist of English politics.

  • I thought I remembered that as a rumor from somewhere around 2005.

It was from the less reputable right wing sites, so, don't etch it in stone.

If it's going to happen, they'll give him a couple years distance of speeches, etc before they really integrate him into the operation. He may be a partner, but they wouldn't let him out front for awhile.

    I don't know.

    Rumor.
