Treating the Democrats like Iran

Reading about the President's offer to the Democrats to come to the White House to "discuss" the standoff on the war spending bill, I'm struck by the similarity to the failed policy in dealing with Iran.
On one hand, Bush extended an offer to meet with lawmakers next Tuesday. On the other, the White House bluntly said it would not be a negotiating session.

Democrats questioned the point of a meeting if the president won't negotiate.

By accepting the meeting, you are conceding every point. How's that policy working out with Iran?

  • Bush only looked powerful when he was surrounded by weakness. An inner circle of apologists and a sycophantic congress. When he's faced with credible, organized opposition, he is revealed as the weak and petulant man-boy the he is.

Americans might have seen his stance toward Iran as "tough." But the same stance taken with their representatives in congress? That just makes him looks like an asshole. The Democratic congress is not some straw man Bush can rail against. This congress talks back... and they're making a lot of sense.

  • Even more than all that, the policy is ineffective. It's produced no result.

I'd be willing to engage it if it had produced any result, anywhere, but this far, Syria, Iran, North Korea, the absolute hardline has generated nothing.
